The Sultana Disaster Museum tells the story of the Sultana Riverboat that exploded and sank in the Mississippi River on April 27, 1865 resulting in over 1800 deaths of paroled Union soldiers. The event is known as the “greatest maritime disaster in U.S. history”. The museum focuses on the steamboat, the passengers-who they were and where they came from, and the aftermath of the disaster. Plan to spend a couple of hours immersed in the tragic story from the Civil War that is largely left out of the history books.
